The Beginning

"Why can't we find furniture that fits?"

Mark and Julie

We are the founders of Muju, back in 2016 we struggled to find furniture that fit our home, either too long, too high, wrong shape, and we were a little tired of the same flimsy chipboard products and couldn’t justify spending a small fortune on bespoke made pieces. We got to thinking why is this so hard? It can’t just be us finding this frustrating?

So we set to work creating affordable handmade products that actually suited our customers requirements rather than off the shelf options from big stores.

The Boom

COVID 19 HAPPENED!!

Within the first few years the demand for the products we made exceeded our expectations we had glowing revuiews, repeat customers and a healthy queue of orders coming in.

We steadily improved our offering and the way we did things, then Covid happened!

Working from home became a necessity and we were inundated, literally overflowing, we could not have anticipated the demand and we were turning customers away, so we expanded to larger premises and took on staff.

The Expansion

Workshop was too small, we had to expand with new products.

After realising that Covid was going to be an on going issue rather than a short term thing we decided to move again just 1 year later to larger premises and yet more staff.

Our products were now being produced still by hand from our team and the rate of our production was astonishing at times.

We then became keen apprentices of Lean manufacturing techniques, Improving our processes and systems allowed us to keep our handmade status that we were proud of rather than utilising automated machinery, which we felt took the human element out of the pieces that our customers valued so much.

Muju

Now

Trying to improve our reach, make new exciting products.

In April of 2022 we had the opportunity to move to our current home an 8000sq/ft building that we can continue to grow in over the exciting years to come.

The Covid boom passed but we continued to output at a high level and continue to expand, both our techniques and ranges.

We feel we now understand our customers wants and needs more clearly and are delighted to be approched to create custom and bespoke pieces regularly.

If we can help you with a design of your own or you wish to personlise one of our standard pieces just get in touch we are happy to help.

Mark & Julie

Incase you’re wondering – ‘MUJU’- a noun, is made from a combination of the flattering nickname the kids have for me (due to my stature) ‘big moo cow’ and the beginning of my lucky wifes name ‘Julie’. We are a family run business, 2 Mere mortals, 3 kids designed by us, 2 naughty dogs and 5 chickens... at the last count.
